nicht or kein? Saying no in German
Use kein to say no to a noun that would have ein or no article. Use nicht for everything else.
Which one?
kein: replaces ein or no article
- ein Termin (an appointment) → kein Termin
- Zeit (time) → keine Zeit
Ich habe keinen Termin.I don’t have an appointment.
Wir haben keine Zeit.We have no time.
nicht: verbs, adjectives, der/die/das, names
Ich arbeite heute nicht.I’m not working today.
Das Zimmer ist nicht groß.The room isn’t big.
Das ist nicht Lukas.That isn’t Lukas.
Where does nicht go?
- At the end when it says no to the whole sentence: Ich verstehe das nicht. (I don’t understand that.)
- Before the word it says no to: Das ist nicht teuer. (That isn’t expensive.) Ich wohne nicht in Berlin. (I don’t live in Berlin.)
