German adjective endings

An adjective before a noun gets an ending. After it (Das Zimmer ist hell) it gets none. The ending depends on the word in front.

The big idea

  • The gender signal (r, e, s, m, n) must appear once.
  • If the article already shows it (der, dem …), the adjective just takes -e or -en.
  • If the article doesn’t (ein, mein, no article), the adjective shows it.

After der / die / das (and dieser, jeder)

m.f.n.pl.
Nom.der neue Kollegedie neue Kollegindas neue Hausdie neuen Kollegen
Akk.den neuen Kollegendie neue Kollegindas neue Hausdie neuen Kollegen
Dat.dem neuen Kollegender neuen Kollegindem neuen Hausden neuen Kollegen

der neue Kollege = the new colleague (m.) · die neue Kollegin = the new colleague (f.) · das neue Haus = the new house. Only 5 × -e (Nom. all singular + Akk. die/das). Everything else -en.

After ein / kein / mein

m.f.n.pl. (kein/mein)
Nom.ein neuer Kollegeeine neue Kolleginein neues Hauskeine neuen Kollegen
Akk.einen neuen Kollegeneine neue Kolleginein neues Hauskeine neuen Kollegen
Dat.einem neuen Kollegeneiner neuen Kollegineinem neuen Hauskeinen neuen Kollegen

Where ein has no ending (m. Nom., n. Nom./Akk.), the adjective shows the gender: -er, -es.

No article at all

m.f.n.pl.
Nom.heißer Kaffeefrische Milchkaltes Wasserneue Schuhe
Akk.heißen Kaffeefrische Milchkaltes Wasserneue Schuhe
Dat.mit heißem Kaffeemit frischer Milchmit kaltem Wassermit neuen Schuhen

hot coffee · fresh milk · cold water · new shoes. The adjective takes the ending der/die/das would have had.
